Clinton Esports

Spring 2020 Varsity Esports Picture

The Clinton Esports Team was started in 2017 as a way to allow students to compete in the new and growing sport of electronic video games.

Currently, the District participates in League of Legends through the Wisconsin High School Esports Association (WIHSEA). Students compete for Conference and State titles in 3 divisions. Students compete for college scholarships.

Through esports we are able to bring students in from every social group and begin breaking down barriers and getting students participating in a school activity who may not have otherwise been participating or do not fall in with traditional sports.

Esports Director

Bryan Erskine - Esports Director

I founded and have been coaching the High School Varsity and JV esports teams now since 2017.

I love video games and exploring the many benefits that video games can bring to our students.

I give presentations throughout the state of Wisconsin on the positive impacts esports has on students and the importance of bringing these programs into schools.

I am also a sitting board member for the Wisconsin High School Esports Association (WIHSEA).

League of Legends

Clinton Versus Oconto Picture

League of Legends is a 5v5 MOBA game, or Multiplayer online battle arena. League of Legends or LoL is a fast paced action-strategy game with the goal of getting to your opponents Nexus (Base) and destroying it before your opponent can destroy yours.

The game is considered one of the most strategic games out there competing with even games like chess for its complexity, strategy, and difficult to master mechanics.

League of Legends Map

The Map has 7 areas to it.

  • Red Side Base (with Nexus)
  • Blue Side Base (with Nexus)
  • Top Lane
  • Mid Lane
  • Bottom Lane
  • Jungle (Area between the lanes)
  • River (separates the red and blue sides)

Each lane has three towers for each side (3 Red, 3 Blue) defending against players getting to the Nexus. Each lane has an Inhibitor behind the third tower. The Nexus has its own two towers defending it.

Each lane has 6 minions which spawn every 30 seconds from the Nexus and run up/down each lane to defend the towers. Every few waves a Cannon Minion will spawn as a 7th minion to help defend the towers. (Every third wave for the first 15 minutes, every other wave between the 15 and 25 minute markers, and every wave after 25 minutes).

In the Jungle there are neutral objective minions which do not belong to any side. Think of this as the wildlife of the Jungle. There are four areas of the map 2 on each side Red and Blue where each side of the Jungle has 2 special Minions that give a special Red and Blue Buff these buffs are not tied to the color of the map side they just happen to be the same colors. In the River there are two larger "Pits" where Drakes, Scuttle Crabs, Rift Herald, and the Baron monsters spawn. Taking these objectives gives the team who kills it a special reward that can significantly help their team to win the game.

There are 5 players that play on each team and 5 positions like in a Basketball game.

Top Laner - This player defends the Top Turret (Tower) and attempts to take the enemy top turret. This position is usually a tank or bruiser but sometimes you can see other champs played here.

Mid Laner - This player defends the Mid Turret (Tower) and attempts to take the enemy mid turret. This player is also responsible for roaming the map when able to try to make plays happen in other lanes or assist the Jungler with neutral objectives to gain an advantage. This player typically plays mages and assassins.

AD Carry - This player plays in the bottom lane defending turret and attempting to take the enemy turret. This player typically plays the highest damage champions in the game but are also the easiest to kill by the enemy.

Support - This players job is to defend the AD Carry and Assist the Jungler. The job of the support is to keep the enemy players from killing the AD Carry while also providing "vision" of the jungle and assisting the jungler to make plays around the map.

Jungler - This player's job is to take neutral objectives and support the laners. The junglers job is massively complex as it changes based on the type of strategy the team wants to employ. The Jungler is typically a playmaker and requires the most communication and decision-making ability.
