A 1:1 (One to One) initiative is designed to ensure that each student has an electronic device available to them at every time of the school day and for some grades available to them after school while at home as well.
While at school the devices are utilized at the educator's discretion as a tool to enhance learning and foster self-based learning.
Recently a first of its kind meta-analysis of 15 years worth of research studies in regards to 1:1 in K12 education was completed. At the end of this analysis, researchers concluded that having a 1:1 program in K12 increases student achievement and gave a modest boost to their 21st-century skills. (Doran and Herold 2016).
The researchers stated that the 1:1 program alone does not instantly boost test scores but is the first important step to improving those scores. Binbin Zheng, an assistant professor at Michigan State University and researcher in the study, found that 1:1 "laptop programs, on average, had a statistically significant positive impact on student's test scores in English/language arts, writing, math, and science".
The Clinton Community School District has taken the first step toward better the education of our students by initiating a 1:1 program of its own. Though we are still in the beginning states we hope to continue to improve upon this initiative and continue to better engage and educate our students.
Our Kindergarten has a mix of iPads and Chromebooks available to the class as well as a few Windows desktop computers available to them on an as needed basis.
1st grade through 5th grade have Chromebooks available to them in the classroom throughout the day. These students keep their devices at school and place them in a charging area when not in use.
6th grade through 12th grade are able to utilize our BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) program or have a Chromebook issued to them by the district which they are able to take home with them at night. These devices are turned in over the summer.
While in the School District ALL devices are filtered to the best of our ability while attempting to maintain a balance so that the filtering is not too restrictive as to not allow students to accomplish their assignments. No filter 100% effective. Chromebooks issued by the school are filtered at home as well as at the school.
The school-issued Chromebooks are replaced every 4th school year as the lease comes up. This creates a recurring cost meaning we always have updated devices for our students utilizing the same line of funding. We recognize and understand the need to keep our student's devices running efficiently in order to have a successful 1:1 program.
